It is the highest award in Chinese acrobatics and the most prestigious competition in the field. The competition was divided into Group A and Group B, with 13 acts in each group. Over two days, four rounds were held, and each act was performed twice.

On the evening of September 16, the original Yu Opera Lion's Roar, produced by the Xi'an Yu Opera Theatre, appeared at the 11th Shaanxi Provincial Arts Festival, brilliantly staged at the Shanyang County Workers' Cultural Palace Grand Theatre. It competed for the Shaanxi Wenhua Award, interpreting patriotism through the new charm of traditional opera.

The original modern Yu Opera Lion's Roar is a 2026 National Arts Fund large-scale stage drama grant project, meticulously created by Xi'an Yu Opera Theatre Co., Ltd. Based on the real life of Mr. Fan Cuiting, known as the "Father of Modern Yu Opera," the production looks back on the tumultuous history of the Lion's Roar Troupe's westward migration during the war and its rooting in Chang'an, continuing the long-standing theatrical and cultural lineage between Henan and Shaanxi. With powerful Yu Opera melodies, the play praises the lofty spirit of the older generation of opera predecessors who preserved their art in adversity and served the country with loyal hearts. It deeply explores the core of red literary and artistic spirit, integrating ideological depth, artistic quality, and entertainment value, and delivers a substantial answer to the creative transformation and innovative development of traditional opera in the new era.

In this epic presentation of the wartime opera world, two professional lighting fixtures from FINE ART used precise light and shadow to paint the backdrop of the times for the Lion's Roar Troupe's westward migration. On the evening of September 15, the opening ceremony of the 11th Shaanxi Provincial Arts Festival was held at the Shangluo Cultural and Arts Centre Grand Theatre. Held every three years, the Shaanxi Provincial Arts Festival took place in southern Shaanxi for the first time this year, running from September 15 to October 14 in Shangluo. Adhering to the purpose of "a grand gathering of arts, a festival for the people," the event featured opening and closing ceremonies, evaluations for the Wenhua Award and the Galaxy Award, exhibitions of outstanding fine arts, calligraphy, and photography, and benefit performances of excellent productions. It presented outstanding works created over the past three years by Shaanxi's professional art troupes and mass art workers, built an important platform for industry exchange and talent cultivation, and helped advance the construction of a strong cultural province.

As drums and gongs sounded and the curtain rose, the Shangluo Flower Drum Opera The Protagonist, produced by the Shangluo Local Opera Research Institute, was brilliantly staged as the opening performance, officially launching the province's highest-level arts event. Adapted from the Mao Dun Literature Prize-winning novel of the same name by Shangluo-born writer Chen Yan, the production uses the national-level intangible cultural heritage Shangluo Flower Drum Opera as its artistic vehicle. It integrates local opera vocal styles, modern stage technology, and live symphony performance, using a local theatrical form to interpret a literary classic by a local author. The opera tells the tumultuous life of Yi Qin'e, a country girl who enters the world of traditional Chinese opera. With a shepherd's song, the innocent girl joins a county opera troupe. Despite cold treatment and criticism, she quietly perseveres. Through her outstanding skills, she rises step by step to the center of the stage, becoming a renowned opera star who tastes both glory and loneliness.

As one of the important activities of the Arts Festival, the final evaluation of the Galaxy Award was held at the Shangluo Theatre from September 7 to 10. Sixty-eight outstanding mass art works competed fiercely across four artistic categories: music, dance, drama, and quyi. With a stronger mass character, richer everyday warmth, and deeper ideological content, they highlighted the new achievements and breakthroughs in Shaanxi's mass art work.

On the evening of July 30, the three-day trial performance of the newly compiled Hakka mountain opera Rainy Songkou concluded at the Liangsheng Hakka Art Center in Meizhou. In the packed theatre, the misty rain of the ancient town of Songkou seeped into the hearts of contemporary audiences. Overseas Chinese returnees heard the echoes of their ancestors boarding ships, while young people understood the profound weight of the word "righteousness." Two generations completed a dialogue that transcended time.

"Since ancient times, Songkou has not bowed to the prefecture." As the first stop for Hakka people heading to Southeast Asia, the story of Rainy Songkou is rooted in this land. Under the joint creation of a top‑tier creative team including director Li Jiansheng, stage designer Ji Qiao, and lighting designer Xing Xin, the opera adopts a unique circular narrative structure, breaking away from the conventional patterns of traditional Hakka opera. It reflects the changing tides of a great era through the fate of three generations of two families in Songkou. The focus is on ordinary people: scholars, rogues, wartime postmen, and Hakka mothers. Liang Wenyuan sells himself to save his neighbors out of scholarly loyalty; Li Nianen repays kindness at the cost of his life, embodying the spirit of the common folk; Li Dusheng grows from an orphan to a revolutionary; and the Liang family, across two generations, sacrifices everything for the nation. The opera moves from personal gratitude and loyalty to family heritage, and finally to national duty, achieving a layered spiritual elevation. "Light and Ferry" is the spiritual motif of the opera: the tangible ferry is at Songkou Wharf, while the intangible ferry lies in everyone's heart, symbolizing the spiritual journey of a nation upholding righteousness and seeking light through a century of upheaval – a journey for which countless people willingly serve as boats to carry others forward.

On July 12, the polished and upgraded version of the large‑scale modern Qin opera On the Banks of the Nanluo River, meticulously created by the Luonan County Troupe, was brilliantly staged at the Shangluo Cultural and Arts Centre Grand Theatre. As a key production for the 11th Shaanxi Provincial Art Festival and a 2025 Shaanxi Provincial Art Creation Grant project, the opera fully demonstrates the fruitful achievements of Shangluo's literary and artistic creation with its profound historical heritage, exquisite artistic presentation, and distinct regional characteristics.

Centered on the Luo family's century‑old tofu workshop as a spiritual vessel, the opera spans more than eighty years of changing times, chronicling the craftsmanship perseverance and spiritual legacy of three generations of the Luo family. During the War of Liberation, the tofu workshop served as an underground contact station; Luo's mother sacrificed her life to protect revolutionary comrades, and the young Luo Fulai, carrying her faith, joined the revolution. In the socialist construction period, Luo Fulai returned to his hometown to participate in the construction of the Luohui Canal, benefiting his neighbours through practical dedication. In the new era, the younger generation carries forward the tofu‑making skills, innovates industrial development models, and allows the spirit of simplicity, perseverance, and selfless dedication to continue along the banks of the Nanluo River from generation to generation. Rooted in the essence of Qin opera and grounded in real rural life, the production carries out systematic innovations in narrative structure, stylized presentation, and vocal music, vividly portraying the collective struggle of the people of Luonan who follow the Party, overcome difficulties, and build their homeland.

As the lights dimmed and the songs lingered, the original Shanxi folk opera Ode to Taihang concluded successfully at the Shanxi Grand Theatre on the evenings of June 28 and 29. This revival, upgraded with special funding from the Shanxi Art Fund, debuted a brand‑new version. Its gripping plot, powerful singing, and immersive stage presentation deeply moved the audience, offering a literary and artistic tribute to the revolutionary years and a heartfelt salute to the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China.

 

The opera traces the life of an ordinary village girl, Li Ziqing, telling her story of struggling through hardship, awakening amid the flames of war, and firmly holding onto her faith through trials. Scenes of delivering supplies to the front, rescuing the wounded, defending their homes, and answering the nation's call unfold layer by layer, vividly recreating the historical truth of the people of the Taihang region giving everything they had to support the front and the deep bond between the military and the civilians. The "Taihang flower," which runs throughout the opera, grows from cracks in cliffs and stands firm against wind and frost, symbolizing the unyielding spirit of the Taihang people who never give up even in desperate times and turn toward the sun. The music deeply integrates regional elements such as Shangdang flowering tunes and local Shanxi folk songs, accompanied by a live folk orchestra, giving the red story a distinctly Shanxi flavor and emotional resonance. This revival has been comprehensively optimized in terms of character emotional layers, singing details, plot rhythm, and lighting scheduling, with many new life‑like scenes added, allowing the weighty red history to shed its stiffness and gain warmth. The theatre was packed, and the applause was long‑lasting.

On June 25, the large-scale historical Qin opera Luo Gong Bian, produced by the Shangzhou District Cultural Troupe, successfully premiered at the Shangluo Cultural and Arts Centre Grand Theatre. The play is based on the true historical deeds of Luo Wensi, a magistrate of Shangzhou during the Qing Dynasty, and uses the passionate, stirring rhythms of Qin opera to tell a centuries-old tale of an upright official.

During the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, a dangerous cliff-side path along the Danjiang River in Shangzhou made travel perilous for merchants and commoners alike. Luo Wensi, then the magistrate, showed deep concern for the people's plight. He used his own salary to fund the project, refused to impose levies or disturb the populace, and personally led the villagers in cutting through rock to widen the treacherous narrow path into a safe thoroughfare. He also installed stone railings and built rest platforms, completely solving the travel problem. The play goes beyond the story of building the Luo Gong Bian, fully portraying his ten-year tenure during which he built schools, promoted farming and sericulture, and repaired bridges over rivers. When he left office, he had not accumulated any personal wealth, but left behind safe roads and prosperous livelihoods for Shangzhou. In gratitude, the people named the road "Luo Gong Bian" and erected a stele in his memory, transforming the ancient path into a spiritual monument that transcends time.

After six months of meticulous refinement, the play retains the traditional artistic essence of Qin opera – singing, recitation, acting, and acrobatics – while subtly incorporating local cultural symbols such as the ancient Shangzhou road and intangible cultural heritage, allowing local audiences to instantly recognize familiar touches of home. During the performance, the dramatic plot combined with the stirring rhythms repeatedly ignited the audience, and the applause during the curtain call lasted for several minutes.
